If you are forever picking hair off the sofa, you are not alone. Shedding is normal, but there is a lot you can do to keep it under control. Here is what actually works.

1. Brush more than you think you need to

Regular brushing is the single most effective way to reduce loose hair in your home. For most dogs a few times a week is enough; heavy shedders during a coat change benefit from daily sessions. A de-shedding tool reaches the loose undercoat that a normal brush misses.

2. Feed the coat from the inside

A healthy coat starts with good nutrition. Omega-3 fatty acids, from fish oil or a quality food, support skin and reduce excessive shedding. If shedding suddenly increases, check the diet first.

3. Bathe, but not too often

An occasional bath with a gentle dog shampoo loosens dead hair and keeps skin healthy. Over-bathing strips natural oils and can make shedding worse, so stick to once every few weeks unless your dog gets dirty.

4. Keep skin healthy and hydrated

Dry, itchy skin sheds more. Keep fresh water available and watch for irritation or parasites, which can drive heavy shedding.

When to see a vet

Sudden bald patches, red skin, or shedding paired with scratching can signal allergies or a health issue. If in doubt, get it checked.
