Feeding your dog well is one of the biggest things you control for their health and energy. Here is a simple, no-nonsense guide.
How much should you feed?
Portion size depends on weight, age and activity. Start with the guidance on your food's packaging, then adjust to your dog's body condition: you should be able to feel the ribs without seeing them. Too round, feed a little less; too lean, a little more.
How often?
Most adult dogs do well on two meals a day, morning and evening. Puppies need smaller, more frequent meals. A consistent schedule supports digestion and house training.
Common feeding mistakes
- Free-feeding all day, which hides appetite changes and encourages overeating.
- Too many treats. Keep treats under about 10 percent of daily calories.
- Sudden food switches, which upset the stomach. Transition over 5 to 7 days.
- Feeding foods toxic to dogs such as chocolate, grapes, onions and xylitol.
Slow things down
Dogs that gulp their food can benefit from a slow feeder or elevated bowl, which aids digestion and comfort, especially for larger breeds.
Fresh water always
Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Hydration matters as much as the food.
